spnm and Concorde Ensemble : Call for Participants

In early June 2005 and as part of Deirdre Gribbin's second Season of Events as Artistic Director of spnm, Concorde Ensemble will perform a concert of new works in Dublin. spnm [The Society for the Promotion of New Music] announces a call for proposals.  

spnm - promoting new music
exists to serve, inspire, educate and bring together composers, performers and audiences.  It promotes the creation, performance and appreciation of new music through a range of unique opportunities and services.

Concorde was established in Dublin in 1976 to promote new music on a regular basis.  The group continues to nurture the creation and performance of contemporary music and to provide opportunities for listeners to engage with a range of music from recent times.  Concorde commission both Irish and international composers, perform throughout Ireland and at international
festivals and work with distinguished guest soloists in the field.

The call

This is an opportunity to write a new piece for Concorde with workshops in advance of submission of the score and parts.  Composers will be selected for the project by Jane O'Leary, Director of Concorde Ensemble, and Deirdre Gribbin, spnm Artistic Director. The project will be structured as follows:
1 Open workshop 20th November 2004
Chance to hear the instruments, work with the players on sketches and develop ideas.  
2 Closed workshop 14th April 2005
Rehearsal of first draft of new pieces. Following this workshop, there will be the chance to complete the piece for final submission by 13th May 2005.
3 Performance 12th June 2005  
Public performance of the new works in the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin.

The workshops, rehearsals and concert will take place in Ireland and a bursary fund will be available for those selected to cover travel and accommodation costs.

You must be Irish, Northern Irish or resident in Ireland currently.  
Your piece must be for three to six players from the following ensemble: flute (doubling alto flute and piccolo), clarinet, (doubling bass clarinet), violin, cello, piano, accordion, soprano voice.
Your final piece should be 6-8 minutes in duration.  
You must be available to attend the workshop, rehearsal and performance dates in Dublin.

How to Apply :
€ Please send the following:  
o 100 words saying why you would like to participate in the project, your proposed choice of instruments and ideas or outline for the new work.
o Some sketches for the piece you would write (maximum two sides of manuscript)
o A recent work (if you already have a work on the spnm shortlist and wish this to be considered, you do not need to resend it.) Please note that this work will be to give an indication of your music - it will not be used in this project.  
o A cv
If you would like any of the materials that you submit for the call returned please enclose a postal order, cheque or draft for £2.50 payable to spnm.
The deadline for submissions is 29th October 2004.
